Dressing the Part

Alan Smith, Costume Design -- The timeless themes of love, jealousy, and heartache in La Bohème transfer seamlessly from the original Dickensian era to the early 1960’s Paris. 

The classic style of poets and artists such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsburg, and Jackson Pollock dictated the costume designs for this production. The feminine silhouettes of Jean Shrimpton and Brigitte Bardot influenced the ladies’ costumes as well. 

This cool new beat generation had an anti-establishment approach to dressing which forever changed the trajectory of fashion, paving the way for the hippies in the late 1960’s. The artists and poets of this director’s La Bohème reflect a free spirited, relaxed attitude in the clothes they wear. We hope it will be nostalgic for a certain generation in our audience. Enjoy!
